Essay on Edith Stein in The Modern Saints by Gracie Morbitzer

Gracie’s beautiful new book is out! I’ve been a big fan of Gracie’s work for some time and am excited to see much of it compiled into a lovely book for others to encounter.

I’m also honored to have contributed a piece on the 20th-century saint and martyr Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) to this project. I wrote about Edith Stein’s conversion to Catholicism and what her relationship with her Jewish heritage looked like after her conversion. As a convert to Catholicism myself, I tried to explore what conversion means in light of the Cross by Stein’s witness: she offered her life in solidarity with the Jewish people — that is, her people, whom she did not forget, neglect, or reject when she converted — in the Holocaust.
